Fresh reel for 2009

Category: Showreel, Video

Happy new year everyone! Well, not quite new anymore. It’s the time of the month where people have given up their resolutions but still struggling at the gym to lose holiday weight - so still festive if only in an unhealthy way.

Anywho, i thought i’d take time off from the treadmill to cut together my latest reel before i jet off on my travels (link) so I shouldn’t have to do too much dressing up as a hot dog and giving out coupons to pay my way around the world!

The reel contains work from a variety of projects I’ve worked on during my full time employment in the UK, including the award winning NanoWhat? films plus character animations, commercials and title sequences.

Hello Australia!

Category: travel

Indeed hello to anyone of you who may reside in the beautiful country known as Down Under, as I shall soon by upping tools (laptop and mega drive included) and stuffing a bag full of clothes, ear plugs and hand-me-down travel guides to spend the best part of 2009 exploring Australia, New Zealand and the USA!

With Cairns being my first port of call, it is 9358 miles from my current home of Nottingham. Even with free wi-fi around, the distance seems a bit too much to keep up the day job! However I will be settling in major cities down the east coast of Australia as well as New Zealand and the USA throughout 2009 and will be intending on keeping my bank account in credit to the best of my ability.

Therefore if you or anyone you know has a spare workstation for an After Effects enthusiast in an office or need a spare pair of hands to offline an edit then do please get in touch! I’m very keen to meet up with as many likeminded people along my trip, as is the point of travel, and would love to spend some time working in new environments with exciting people on fresh film/video/tv projects.

Check out my latest reel by clicking Showreel at the top of the page and my CV is available for download too.

Now, how does this multitool work….?

We WON! Royal Television Society Awards 2008.

Category: Motion Graphics, Video

Despite the gap in communication over the past few weeks you’d be forgiven for thinking i was hanging my head in disappointment at losing out in the Royal Television Society Awards, whereas in fact I’ve been so busy celebrating and jumping on my desk at the fact that we indeed WON!

This is the second award for VPoint.TV but my first as a lead motion designer and I’m pretty chuffed about it all! We won the Best Corporate / Non Broadcast Film award which is a great honour, especially as we lost in the same category last year so we could come back with a vengeance this time!

What Awards? NanoWhat? Oh…..

Category: Motion Graphics, Video

Yes indeed, i’m very proud to have earlier this year worked on a selection of films for the NanoWhat? roadshows that took place in the UK during this summer which have been nominated for TWO AWARDS at the Royal Television Society Awards which are taking place next Saturday.

Entered in the Best Corporate/Non Broadcast film and Best Innovation/Multimedia categories, NanoWhat? explains nanotechnology in an entertaining and easy-to-digest fashion using experiments, special effects and our talented presenter Matt Jamie.

The turnaround from the studio shoot to the first event viewing was a very tight eight working days and within this time chroma key, After Effects environments and complex 3D animations were accomplished to create a highly polished and applauded 20 minute film.

More Hockley Hustle jolliness

The Hockley Hustle festival 2008 takes place this Sunday 5th October in the sexy / trendy / eclectic area of Nottingham known as Hockley and, in response to my previous post, here are some more animations i’ve done for the festival.

Nottingham has a brilliant music / film / arts scene and that’s complimented by the successful online / print magazine LeftLion and these chaps are taking over the Broadway Cinema for the Hockley Hustle this year. So if you head over to Broadway on Sunday you may see these jolly things shining from the projector outside…

Funky animation for Hockley Hustle 2008

A few years ago myself and my funkiest favest producer (and best friend) Kate Horlor produced our first project together. We were living together at the time and were totally into live music (albeit never in agreement on who had the best taste) and wanted desperately to start producing music videos. One year the opportunity to produce a live DVD for the Oxjam music festival, raising funds for Oxfam in the process, arrived and we both dived head first into the most hectic two months of our lives.

The venue was Nottingham’s legendary Rock City and it was a gig with three bands performing. We managed to cram 7 cameras in there, film the entire session with a live audio mix, then edit, grade and author a double-disc DVD within the month following the gig (working around full time work also!). We sold a great number of the DVD’s and raised a fair few hundreds of pounds for a very worthy cause, but the main reason for us doing it is because me and Kate both love live music!

For a mini-docu on the DVD we interviewed a nice fella who runs the Hockley Hustle festival and every year since then is has been getting bigger and bigger, so this year i thought i’d lend a hand and make their logo throw some funky shapes.

Show your support on Facebook for Hockley Hustle here and if you’re in the midlands on Sunday 5th October, get over to Nottingham, head over the hill to Hockley, grab a wristband and a beer, and enjoy it!

Also, here’s the trailer for the original Oxjam DVD Kate and I did back in 2006 (that long ago…?)

Welcome to my bloggy

Category: General

Hello everyone!

So, i’ve set up this blog to showcase and share my work as a motion graphics designer as well as my love for all things brilliant - be it music, video, tv, art, comedy, haircuts, sandwiches, whatever i happen to feel like sharing at the time.

I’ll probably post a mix of my own video work, funny tidbit’s from the web, random music and funny/unfunny-yet-interesting photos at varying intervals depending on how busy I am at work/home/piggybacking on other wireless networks.

Feel free to comment, post your own random related findings (no needless spamming of porn sites please, this isn’t YouTube) and i hope you find something interesting here!

BYE!
